Introduction

Social Action and Rehabilitation Association (SARA) is a community organisation (CO) in Theni district of Tamil Nadu State in India. Founded in 1998, the CO works for the overall socioeconomic and health empowerment of transgender (TG) persons and men having sex with men in the district.

SARA has 545 members and is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975.

Mission

SARA aims to promote social, political, and economic equity and campaign for civil and legal rights of transgender people; establishing social, economic, and environmental justice for them, and eliminate oppression and exclusion based on race, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, legal status, sexual orientation, age, and disability; and prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or expression and ensure that the entire range of transgender people are protected.

Services Provided

SARA's multiple initiatives are designed to facilitate the socioeconomic empowerment of its members.

  • Facilitating access to government welfare schemes for its members and their families
  • Promoting microfinance self help groups among its TG members at the village level to facilitate access to savings, credit and insurance for their economic empowerment
  • Organising skill training, credit access and marketing support for livelihood promotion
  • Conducting legal aid training and providing counseling services for transgender persons, adolescent girls and boys in distress at the village and block levels
  • Provide HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services

The CO envisions a society where transgender people have enhanced self esteem, are respected and has the goodwill of the mainstream community; and to stand on its own two feet and have all TG persons and MSM in the district be enrolled as its members.
