Gnana Deepam Sevai Maiyam (GDSM) is a non-profit organisation (NGO) that works with groups of women from economically backward families in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu State in India. Women from low income families in the district can become a member by paying a fee. GDSM was founded in 2012.

GDSM has 2085 members and is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975.


GDSM's main objective is to address the developmental needs of its members through livelihood and civic initiatives, and create a distinct identity as a community institution that is owned, managed and run by the community.

Services Provided

As part of empowering marginalised women through holistic development, GDSM's interventions provide a range of services.

  • Enhancing access to social protection schemes from the government
  • Promoting self help groups (SHGs) to encouraging members to save, and enable access to insurance and loans for livelihood activities
  • Providing exposure and skills training for livelihood development
  • Training in legal aid and organising counselling sessions for women and adolescent girls and boys in distress
  • Implementing HIV prevention and care services including positive prevention, ART linkages, regular health check up

GDSM plans to introduce educational assistance for children from low income families to continue education; set up a vocational skill training center for adolescent girls and boys to get employment; introduce life and health insurance schemes for all the members and their spouses through the SHGs; conduct medical camps in all the working villages to provide medical assistance to people in need; facilitate loans from banks for more SHGs for livelihood activities; promote group income generation activities for economic independence of members; raise resources locally to run and sustain the society for longer years for the benefit of the members and society at large.
