Introduction

Dharmapuri Mavatta Pengal Mempattu Sangam (DMPMS) is a community organisation (CO) of women in sex work in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu State in India. The CO, founded in 2012, supports the overall well being of sex workers and their children through various initiatives.

DMPMS is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 and has 1730 members.

Mission

DMPMS aims to develop the social and economic status of vulnerable women.

Services Provided

Managing a strong network of 86 self help groups (SHGs), DMPMS provides services that help its members address their health, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities.

  • Providing targeted intervention services to the members to reduce their HIV vulnerability
  • Building financial security by promoting savings through SHGs and facilitating bank linkages for credit
  • Providing exposure and skills training for livelihood development
  • Enabling access to social entitlements and schemes from the government
  • Supporting women to fight violence through a dedicated crises reponse system
  • Mobilising membership and resources for strengthening institutional development and increased reach to vulnerable women
  • Advocating with public and private sector actors to sensitise them to the needs of women in sex work

DMPMS works toward the socioeconomic development of female sex workers and their children through education.
