Introduction

Savitri Mahila Sanstha (SMS) is a community organisation (CO) of female sex workers in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra State in India. The CO works to empower its members through holistic development intervention programmes.

SMS founded in 2014 is registered under the Maharashtra Societies Registration Act, 1860. It has 1050 members.

Mission

SMS aims to address the developmental needs of its members through livelihood and civic initiatives and create a distinct identity for itself as a community institution, owned, managed and run by the community.

Services Provided

SMS works to achieve its mission by providing various services to its members.

  • Encouraging savings through various schemes and bank linkages to help women be financially independent
  • Organising health camps , assisted 193 mebers to open an bank account to have regualr savings.
  • Supporting members to access social entitlements and schemes, 323 members to access civic IDs and Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandhai insurance.
  • Building legal literacy of the members to inform them of their rights, trained 18 members on para legal volunteers through DLSA.
  • Reducing violence related vulnerabilities through crisis intervention
  • assited 53 members to apply labour card to access various benefits including health insurance and maternity benefits.

SMS envisions providing vocational training to women who have left sex work; promote group income generation activities; support the women's children in education; and raise resources locally to sustain the organisation.
