Shakthi AIDS Tadegattuva Mahila Sangha (SATMS) is a community organisation (CO) of female sex workers in Belagavi district in Karnataka state in India.

Established in 1996, the CO has 4276 women in sex work as members. It is registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960.


SATMS aims to enable socio-economic, political and cultural empowerment of female sex workers to support them to fight violence and achieve equity and equality.

Services Provided

As part of strengthening and sustaining the organisation formed exclusively to benefit the community of women in sex work, SATMS provides various services to its members.

  • Advancing knowledge on sexual health, distributing condoms and encouraging condom use, providing referral services to the hospital and ART linkages and conducting health camps
  • Building financial security of members through awareness on savings activities, opening bank accounts and getting insurance
  • Promoting a help desk for the community to access social entitlements
  • Raising awareness on safety, security and justice measures to address crisis

SATMS continues to work toward identifying and mobilising sex workers and generating awareness to facilitate greater understanding of HIV/AIDS and reduce stigma and discrimination against those affected and infected by the disease.
