Introduction

Pragathi Mahila Sangam (PMS) is a community organisation (CO) working for the welfare of female sex workers in rural and urban areas of Guntur district, in Telengana State in India. It was started with the objective of empowering community most at risk to HIV/AIDS and supporting HIV positive children. PMS was formed in 2004 with the support of the non-governmental organisation, Kothapet Mahila Mandali. The CO has 56 community based groups out of which 14 groups are engaged in savings activities.

PMS supports 1350 female sex workers and is registered under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act 2001.

Mission

PMS aims to improve the standard of life of its members through social protection, by buidling financial security and addressing crises.

Services Provided

PMS works for the welfare of its members through direct provision of services and in partnership with both government and non-governmental organisations by:

  • Promoting positive prevention among the community members
  • Generating demand for members to access social entitlements
  • Supporting skill development programmes for its members
  • Helping community members to address crises
  • Building community knowledge on financial services products

PMS envisions a society where it's sex worker members can live a life of good health, free from crises and in financial and social security.
