Introduction

Chaitanya Jyothi Women Welfare Society (CJWWS) is a community organisation (CO) of female sex workers in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh State in India. Founded in 2003, the CO caters to the needs of home, street, brothel and highway based sex workers.

CJWWS is registered under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act 2001 and has a membership of 1076 female sex workers.

Mission

Chaitanya aims to empower all community members to access services from the organisation to realise good health and lead a life free from crisis with financial and social security.

Services Provided

Started with the objective of empowering the most vulnerable communities for HIV prevention and for the welfare of HIV+ children, Chaitanya makes available various services for its members.

  • Raising awareness on safety, security and justice measures to address crisis
  • Establishing a helpling to assist community to access CO services
  • Advocating with key stakeholders to prevent and address crises against female sex workers
  • Sensitising law enforcement agencies and providing legal support to the members
  • Facilitating community access of government social protection schemes and sensitising departments to enable the same
  • Strengthening the capacities of the members on rights, laws, and leadership
  • Building members' financial literacy to achieve financial security

CJWWS is working for its HIV prevention efforts to be self sustaining through increased resource mobilisation and to expand the outreach to all women in sex work in the district.
